6 Principles Capacity Development Programme: Review and Next Steps

As Oak’s current funding for this programme fast approaches, we’d like to update you on the current status of the 6P programme, the 6P e-learning resources and the possibilities for accessing them in the short and medium term, and a 6P webinar next week on 25th October.
CtC 6P team
Oak’s financial support to the 6P programme ends at the end of this month. We have been so busy developing the courses that we have not yet been successful in identifying other funds to continue the programme. The direct implication of this is that Peter and Annabel will no longer be supported to focus on assisting this programme after October 2018. Thanks to CtC’s support, Niru will be able to provide administrative support to the 6P e-learning courses until March 2019. In addition, she will be working with CtC to find additional sources of funding for the programme.
We have not had any contact from Oak since before the summer, despite our efforts. Nor, to our knowledge, has there been acknowledgement of the CoP’s Concept Note (please let us know if there is something we have not seen). In this time we understand that they have been very much involved in their own strategy revision. Once Oak’s new strategy has been finalised and is in place, we hope to get some opportunity to discuss how the 6 Principles align with their new strategy. Your thoughts on this are very welcome!
And now the good news !
• 6P Resources
E-learning resources on each of the 6P (CRB; ND; BI; P; DNH & RBS) are now available on the 6P platform. Each course follows a similar format considering both the background theory and (legal) concepts underpinning each of the principles together with how they can be applied in practice both within your organisation as well as in your programming work with and for children.
We would like to thank everyone for being part of the process of compiling these resources. Many of you have contributed significant time and commitment into their development, including work in task groups, webinars, and especially intensive workshop meetings in Arusha, Sofia, and the inter-regional meetings in Leiden. The excellent examples (and photos!) which you have generously shared from your work, make these very rich resources and further confirm that these are your tools! We hope that they will be useful to you, your colleagues, your partners and your wider networks. When further possibilities arise, we look forward to their adaptation and improvement based on your feedback.
You will remember that we have developed these courses primarily for staff with Programme Officer roles and responsibilities. As we’ve discussed, there is however significant scope to adapt them to other functions (or “user groups”), and to your specific contexts/thematic areas of focus. We hope that opportunities will be available to do this in future. Please contact us if your organisation, or group of organisations, are interested in being involved in this. The course evaluation feedback we have been receiving already indicates that we should include more case study material. Unfortunately there hasn’t been time to do this as much as we would have liked, but this is another area which could be developed relatively easily. If anyone is interested to work together to develop relevant case studies to be included in the courses, we would be happy to explore how this can be supported. Please let us know.
• Which course first?
We strongly recommend that everyone takes the CRB course first, particularly the introduction (S1), core concepts and theory modules (S2.1, S2.2). These modules contain the foundations necessary for understanding the other principles. You are able to take these other principles courses in whichever order you choose, although we advise that you undertake the CRC principles’ courses (Non-Discrimination; Best Interests; and Participation) before going on to look at the best practice courses (Do No Harm and Respecting and Building on Strengths).
• Course enrolment
To access the courses, participants need to be logged into the 6P platform and enrolled onto each course. This will be supported by Niru until March 2019, with ongoing administration for course maintenance and trouble-shooting. It is currently unclear how this support will be sustained beyond March
**Please let us know if you (or a colleague) would be interested to learn how to take this on, so that your access to the course can be maintained after the end of this phase of the programme.
• Group participation
You will now be aware that you can take these courses as individuals and also simultaneously in groups. Do not hesitate to contact us if you would like assistance facilitating a group course.
in addition to the 6P e-learning resources, we also have:
• A benchmarking tool for assessing an organisation’s application of each of the 6 Principles
• A growing online library of child rights resources which support the application of the principles
• An international Community of Practice with aprox 400 members (as of Oct2018), representing diverse organisations working with and for children in Eastern Europe and East Africa.
• Task group members with in-depth expertise on the application of the 6P
We hope that through continued support, these resources and tools can continue to developed to further support organisations working with and for children.
If, for example, your organisation is able to mobilise the resources, it might be possible to support organisations and networks with benchmarking, 6P strategy development and support, developing new capacity development resources, and facilitating courses.
...Reviewing our journey
Many of you will remember that the 6P programme began with a benchmarking exercise to assess the extent to which your organisation applied each of the 6 principles in its work, and develop a Capacity Development Plan to enable it to achieve an ideal application of the 6P appropriate for your organisation. The Benchmarking is also a very useful monitoring tool. We encourage you to look again at your organisation using this tool - are there any changes? How does your organisation might score now? We would be very interested to hear from you.
